Mental Maths Test 4

I will publish a list of questions when I have the time.

Well done for making your own mental maths test in classtime today: you were all very brave!

I will add the audio files later.

Mexico Day!

A very busy day!

In the morning we had a drawing competition to see who could create the best Aztec warrior and Aztec clothes. Then, we watched Mr Justo make guacamole and ate/drank some Mexican things. After playtime, we played Patolli, an ancient Aztec game and we broke our pinatas (sorry, English keyboard!). Finally, we had a dancing competition which was won by Emilio after his big "dance-off" with Carlos R!

Phew!

Have a look at our photos in the Flickr photostream (on the right-hand side of our blog).

I even included the photo of you all clearing up to show how responsible you are.

Wednesday, June 15

Remember: Tomorrow is Mexico Day in 4C!

Please remember to bring your food or drink item for tomorrow´s Mexico Day with myself and Mr Justo.

You can bring a white, green or red item of clothing in a bag to change into or you can wear school uniform (it has all three colours!).

I can´t wait to celebrate!

Monday, June 13

Mental Maths Test 3

Here are both recordings for Mental Maths Test 3. The test is a bit longer this week as I have included 5 second, 10 second and 15 second questions. There are 20 questions in total.
This homework is due in next Thursday (16th June).
Remember that you need to revise areas from today´s mental maths test. For example, learn the meaning of "product" or "increase".
See you tomorrow!

The next few weeks...

As you all know, we have finished all our 4th Grade tests (except weekly spelling and Spanish) but we still have a lot of work to do!!!

The plan for the next few weeks is a work in progress as it will depend how long everything takes and I cannot predict that kind of thing!

We will be:
1. Having Mexican (food and piñata) Day.
2. Making Lucas´Gruffalo production as he has written parts for all of you!
I was convinced by the incredible amount of effort he made: well done Lucas!
3. Finishing off our Aztec work by doing a small project in class.
4. Doing general maths to revise before 5th Grade.
5. Doing some exciting science experiments.

If you know you are not going to be in school until the end of term, please let me know as soon as possible. That will help me to plan exactly when and what we will do.

This week´s spellings!

Please learn these spellings for a test next Monday:

jewellery, explanatory, voluntary, dictionary, factory, literacy, library, definitely, miserable, literature, interested, desperate, generous, marvellous, Wednesday, familiar

Good luck!

Mental Maths Test 2

Listen!

Here is the test I promised today. I hope you can understand it all as my nose is still blocked up. In English we do not say that our nose is constipated. Constipated in English is when you cannot go to the toilet so please be careful with this "false friend".
In question 2, the word is HALVE (I found it difficult to breathe when saying it).

Good luck with your mental maths revision!
See you tomorrow!

The Beauty of Life

I hope you all enjoyed the short animation we watched today.
"The Beauty of Life" is an example of how you can use a storyboard.
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

You are going to create your own film narrative (storyboard).
If your ideas are really good we might film them and add them to our blog!
Here are some I did a few years ago with a 5th grade class (I think it was your brother´s class Carla!).

Some of 5th Grade did these for Pirate Day (Carnival) a few years ago.

If you would like to see some of the other work we did, click here.

This week´s spellings: USEFUL WORDS

balloon, garden, brother, sister, father, mother, friends, children, those, sure, clothes, great, head, heard, earth, paper

Please learn these for a test next Monday!

Saturday, May 14

Paper Mache Recipe

This sounds like a better way for us to use paper mache. In the past I have found the newspaper way quite messy. I will try to make some of this over the weekend and check that it works.

This method is very similar to the projects in the book that I was showing you. It allows you to create details much easier than the other method.

Let's see!

How to Make a Piñata

If you click here you can watch other wideos which explain how to make a piñata.

Friday, May 13

Mexican Masks!

Here are a few examples of Mexican masks.
Most of you found an image to use in our ICT lesson this afternoon.
Remember that you need to make a template for your mask on a piece of cardboard, cut it out and bring it in for Monday. It shouldn't take you too long.

Wednesday, May 11

Marvellous Mexican Mocktails!

Here are the photographs of your marvellous Mexican mocktails (cocktails without alcohol). I have been very impressed with your measuring skills in our capacity work this week! Please continue estimating amounts of liquids as it is very tricky.

Tomorrow you will be inventing an advert for your mocktail in our literacy lesson for our persuasion topic.

I was so proud of how you all worked together today and how you cleaned up so quickly. I am almost persuaded to do more fun things before the end of term so keep impressing me please!

In a few of the photographs you can see some of your finished Aztec Codices. When I have finished mounting them on the wall, I will add some more images.

Well done!

Canarian Balconies

As promised, here are some photographs of last year's balconies made by the now 5C and their families.

Good luck with yours!!

Summer uniform

Remember that from Monday you should wear your Summer uniform.

We will be going to Firgas on a trip next Thursday so bring a jumper and umbrella if the weather looks bad on Wednesday night.

Cocktails!

I was thinking that we could make cocktails next week in our numeracy lessons as we will be studying capacity. What do you think? They could have a Mexican theme!!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

4C,

I couldn´t stop thinking today that I forgot something at school and thankfully I´ve just remembered. Today is an important day in Mexico (a national holiday) but it is NOT Mexican indepdendance day as some people think (that is the 16th September).

"Cinco de Mayo" is celebrated more in America than in Mexico but as it is a national holiday, many people do traditional things.

Today celebrates the Battle of Puebla (on 5th May 1862)when Mexico defended its city of Puebla against French troops. Mexico didn´t expect to win because there were about 6000 French soldiers and only 2000 Mexican soldiers.

This is the information I found on the internet and remember that we have to be very careful when using secondary sources.

If you would like to do some Mexico themed activities, click here.

Wednesday, May 4

Percentage of a Number Zap!

4C,

Go to this site to play a really good game to practise finding the percentage of a number.

You can choose which percent to practise. For example, if you find it hard practise 10% or 50%, if you find it okay practise 25% and 75%, and if you find it easy practise 70% and 90%.

Have a go!

Some Art to Inspire You!

As you know, this term we will be making our own Aztec codices (which tell a story), an Aztec mask (made out of paper mache), an Aztec ceramic (made out of clay) and an Aztec mosaic. We will then show these items in a "museum" outside our classroom and discuss what these objects can tell us about the Aztec civilisation.

It does sound like a very ambitious project but I was so impressed with all your work on Picasso in the first term that I KNOW you CAN do it!!!

Success Criteria for your Instrument Project!

I told you today that I will be marking the instruments you make after the holidays. This is the success criteria I will use.

1. My instrument can change volume.
2. My instrument can change pitch.
3. I can collect information about different types of instruments to inspire me.
4. I can make 3 designs and choose the best design.
5. I can label sketches of my design.
6. I can draw a plan to show how I will make my instrument (a flowchart for example).
7. I can use equipment and tools accurately (well measured etc) to make my instrument (it´s ok if an adult helps you but you must do some of the work!).
8. I can write how my instrument works (how you can change the pitch and volume).
9. I can give my instrument a name.
10. I can play my instrument!

Good luck! For those of you going on holiday for the two weeks, you can do this project in the next week. Remember, there are lots of sound websites on our blog to help you.

A possible idea is to make a colourful information booklet all about your instrument which has all the drawings, plan and writing.

Maths revision: test next week!

4C,

Each day I will give you some advice on revision for our tests next week.
This will be the same as the work we are doing in class (and have done this academic year) so there will be no surprises!

1) Practise adding and subtracting correctly! e.g 3494 + 578 627 - 458
2) Practise writing in missing numbers:
218396 _________ 218456 _________ 218831
3) a)Write five numbers in order, largest first.
b)Write five numbers in order, smallest first.
You could use these numbers: 573085 629138 57940 500358 429349
or you could use decimal numbers: 4.6 4.63 4.06 4.1 4.69

Good luck!

Shiver My Timbers!

Shiver my timbers, shiver my soul
Yo Ho Heave Ho
There are men whose hearts are as black as coal
Yo Ho Heave Ho

And they sailed their ship across the ocean blue
A blood thirsty captain and a cut-throat crew.
It´s as dark a tale as was ever told
Of a lust for treasure and a love of gold...

Shiver My Timbers, Shiver my sides
Yo ho heave ho
There are hungers as strong as the winds and tides
Yo ho heave ho

And those bucaneers drowned their sins in rum,
The devil himself would have to call em scum!
Every man on board would have killed his mate
for a bag of guineas or a piece of eight, a piece of eight, a piece of eight
5 6 7 8

HULA WOKA HULA WOKA SOMETHING NOT RIGHT
MANY WICKY ICKY THINGS GONNA HAPPEN TONIGHT
HULA WOKA HULA WOKA SAILOR MAN BEWARE

When the money in the ground there´s murder in the air,
Murder in the air.

ONE MORE TIME NOW!

Shiver my timbers, Shiver my bones
Yo ho heave ho
There are secrets that sleep with old Davey Jones
Yo ho heave ho

When the main sails set and the anchor´s weighed
Theres no turning back from any course that´s laid

And when greed and felony sail the sea,
you can bet your boots there'll be treachery HA HA HA

YAAAAAA YA YA YA AAAAAAAA YAAAAAAA

Shiver my timbers, Shiver my sail,
Dead men tell no tales!

Please learn this for my teacher´s assembly on the 25th of February!
Let me know if you find a better version of this song as this one is not very clear!!

Pirate Day: Friday 25th February!

4C,

You have persuaded me to celebrate Pirate Day next Friday (25th February)!
I have been SO impressed with all the effort you have made so far and you have produced some FANTASTIC WRITING!!!

We will continue to follow the pirate theme for the next three weeks in class and you will write a newspaper article at the end of that time (about a pirate news story).

Bring ye pirate clothes to school me ship mates next Friday!

Remember: do not spend any money! Pirates do not like to spend their wonderful gold doubloons so you can use an old piece of material or a scarf to tie around your head. Alternatively, you could make your own hat out of newspaper or black card. Your sword could be made out of cardboard.
There will be a prize for the best costume made by YOU!!!

I will let you know any further details nearer the time!!

Sunday, February 13

Maths this week: adding quickly and finding the inverse to check your answers.

This week we will be working on how quickly you can add up and we will look at some strategies to help you.
For example,
6+3+4+7
To work this out really quickly, one strategy you could use is to look for number bonds to 10 first. 6+4=10 and 7+3=10

9+5+2+4
a strategy here might be to use your knowledge of doubling. 5+4 is 9. Then you can add the other 9. Finally, add the 2.

If you know any other strategies then please let me know.

Inverse calculations will help you to check your answers in daily maths lessons and in tests. To use an easy example, 60+40=100
so we also know that:
40+60=100
100-40=60
100-60=40

If you have other quick strategies then please let me know.

Inverse calculations.

Writing Website

Sorry! The link didn´t work.
Go to the Jenny Eather writing website.

Brilliant writing website!

I found this on the internet and I think it´s brilliant!
Go to the Jenny Eather writing website and click on EXPLANATION. It shows you how to write an explanation text!

Talk topic: TALK TOPIC. Invent an object for a pirate and explain how it works

This is called the Shirt Machine by Jon Davis.

Firstly, I would like you to invent a machine or an object for Blackbeard.
Then, I would like you to explain how your invented machine or object works.
You will write the EXPLANATION next Friday.

The Grid Method

This is how we will be multiplying on Monday. Have a go at home before if you have the chance!

The Grid Method for multiplication

This is a video made by a teacher in England to explain the grid method.
I think it is very good but please remember two things:
1. Use a ruler.
2. Be careful with PLACE VALUE (keep units under units when you are adding the answer.

Also, 50p x 10 is 500p. We can also write 500p as 5 pounds.

Friday, January 28

Next week in numeracy: doubling and halving

Next week, we will be doubling and halving.
See if you can beat the doubling machine! If you are feeling brave, try a decimal number.

The next website shows the number partitioned and then you guess the double.

Burger Bar
helps you to work out the cost of your meal whilst also practising doubling and halving.

Wednesday, January 26

This Friday´s Writing Task

This Friday you will be writing a description of Blackbeard for the build up of your pirate legend. You have been working on adjectives and past tense for a few weeks and I want you to show me just how much you have improved!

Success criteria:
* Past tense verbs (you may choose to use pirate verbs)
* It makes sense
* Correct punctuation
* Adjectives
You may also use ADVERBS (He moved SLOWLY).

Think about:
1. What Blackbeard looked like. For example: He had a long, black beard.
2. How to describe his clothes. For example: He was wearing torn, dark trousers.
3. How he would move. For example: He trudged angrily along the beach.

Online help for multiplying and dividing

Use BBC Skillswise if you are not sure how to multiply or divide by 10 or 100.
It might help! There are worksheets you can look at and a quiz to do at the end.
Good luck!

This week´s maths!

This week we are doing the following in our maths lessons:
1. Multiplying by 10, 100, 1000
2. Dividing by 10, 100, 1000
It is important that you do NOT just "add a zero" or "take away a zero" when multplying or dividing by 10 and 100 because this strategy does NOT work with decimal numbers. When you multiply numbers by 10, you are making them 10 times bigger. When you are dividing by 10, you are making numbers 10 times smaller.
Example: 25 divided by 10 is 2.5

We will also be doing work on MULTPLES and common multiples this week.

As I was off ill yesterday I have asked the class to give in last week´s literacy homework (adjectives) next Monday with this week´s homework (verbs and comprehension).

Here is a website to practise multiplying and dividing.

Thursday, January 20

The Treasure of Lost Island (A descriptive opening)

Here is an example of a descriptive opening for a legend about Blackbeard.
I found it on a website for children and I have recorded it to show you an example of the oral storytelling we will be doing next week. I will upload your stories on here but we will not add text to yours.

Sorry about my voice: I seem to have a very sore throat tonight. I hope those of you in the class who are ill are feeling a bit better.

Pirate Songs!

This is a good example of a spoken pirate story.
I would like you to make up a story like this next week (but not so long!!) so this week we will be doing a lot of drama to practise!!!

Here is the song we are doing with our buddies so you can practise it!

This week's literacy

We have been doing a lot of work on NOUNS. Go to this website and name nouns. You could also play a game in the playground where your friend has 5 seconds to name 5 yellow things for example.

This week we are going to study adjectives so go to this website.

Read this pirate story online. How could we improve it?

Have a go at writing your own pirate story!(The website will help you).

This is a lovely story poem about a pirate. We will be writing our own rhyming story poems at the end of the term. For now, we will be writing normal stories (no rhyming please!). Watch the video for this book!

Have a look and read some pirate stories written by other children. Could you add any adjectives to them (or even similes/metaphors) to make them even better?

Do some pirate activities (make a flag etc).

A great pirate website from National Geographic.

Brilliant pirate song and story (narrative poem) which is fantastic for teaching you pirate vocabulary.

Funny pirate song.
